The short answer, for men: abs become visible somewhere around 12% body fat, and clearly defined around 10%. Above roughly 15% most men see nothing, and above 20% there's no ambiguity at all.
Those numbers are a starting point, not a law. Here's what moves them, and what the path there actually looks like.
The ranges, honestly

Two things worth flagging. These are ranges for men; women carry meaningfully more essential fat and the corresponding numbers are roughly ten points higher. And the bottom row is not a target to live at — very low body fat is a temporary state for photos or competition, not a sustainable place to build muscle.
Why your number is different from your friend's
Fat distribution is largely genetic, and it's the reason two men at the same measured body fat can look different around the midsection.
Some men store fat preferentially on the abdomen and hold visible love handles well into single digits. Others store it on the legs, hips, or chest and show upper abs at 14%. Neither is doing anything wrong — you inherited a distribution pattern and you can't redirect it. You can only lower the total.
A related consequence, and the reason so many lifters get discouraged: lower abs are almost always last. If your upper two rows are visible and the bottom of your stomach still isn't, nothing is broken. You're simply not far enough down yet.
Age and training history shift things too. More muscle underneath means more relief showing through at any given body fat, so a lifter at 13% often looks leaner than an untrained man at the same number.
Why you probably don't know your number
Here's the uncomfortable part. Almost every method available to you is imprecise, and the errors don't cancel out — they tend to flatter.
Bioelectrical impedance scales swing several percentage points with hydration, so the same body reads differently before and after a glass of water. Calipers are reproducible only if the same trained person does them the same way every time. DEXA is the most respected consumer option and still varies between machines and protocols.
I spent years being told different numbers by different sources, and I consistently believed the lowest one — because it justified continuing to bulk. That's the real risk. Not imprecision, but imprecision in a self-serving direction.
Two better approaches:
- Track the trend, not the value. Whatever method you use, use it identically every time and pay attention to direction and rate. The absolute number can be wrong and still be useful if the error is consistent.
- Ask behavioural questions instead. Can you pinch more than an inch at the navel? Have your shoulders lost separation? Do clothes tighten at the waist but not the shoulders? These proxies are cruder in theory and more honest in practice. The free Body Fat Test is built on exactly this.
How long it takes
The safe rate of fat loss for someone who lifts is 0.5–1% of body weight per week. That figure comes from Garthe and colleagues (2011), who compared slow and fast weight loss in athletes and found the slower rate preserved strength and lean mass while the aggressive one did not.
For an 85 kg man, that's roughly 0.4–0.85 kg per week. Working through it:
- From ~20% to ~12%: about 12–16 weeks
- From ~17% to ~12%: about 8–12 weeks
- From ~15% to ~11%: about 6–10 weeks
Which is where the "12-week cut" comes from — it's not a marketing number, it's the honest duration for the range most lifters are actually in.
Going faster does not shorten this in practice. It costs you muscle and strength, and the resulting physique is smaller rather than sharper. The whole point is to reveal muscle, so a method that removes muscle defeats itself.
Getting there without losing what you built
Three things carry most of the weight:
- Enough protein. The meta-analysis by Morton et al. (2018) established the intake range that supports muscle retention during a deficit.
- Keep training heavy. Maintaining load is the signal that tells your body the muscle is still needed. Cutting weight on the bar because you're in a deficit is backwards.
- Sleep. Nedeltcheva et al. (2010) found that on an identical diet, short sleep shifted a much larger share of the loss from fat to lean tissue.
One more thing to expect: progress won't be linear, and around the middle of a cut it will feel like it's stopped. Some of that is water and glycogen masking real fat loss, and some is genuine metabolic adaptation, which Trexler and colleagues (2014) reviewed in detail — the basis for diet breaks and structured refeeds.
The thing worth saying at the end
Visible abs are a byproduct, not a goal. Nobody who has them got there by targeting them — they got there by lowering total body fat far enough that the muscle underneath showed, and the abs came along with the shoulders, the chest and the jawline.
If your abs aren't visible, you don't have an ab problem. You have a body fat percentage that's higher than you'd like, and that's a solvable, finite, roughly twelve-week problem.
